What's Actually on the Selective Maths Test

If you've started looking into the NSW Selective High School Placement Test, you've probably already discovered that the official information is thin on detail and heavy on jargon. So let's strip it back. Your child sits several components on test day, and the one most parents worry about is the maths paper, officially called Mathematical Reasoning. That name is the single most useful clue you'll get, and we'll come back to why.
Here is exactly what that paper looks like, drawn straight from the Department of Education's own published materials rather than from a coaching college's marketing.
The format, at a glance
- 35 multiple-choice questions, each with five options labelled A to E.
- 40 minutes to answer all of them, about 68 seconds per question if you spread the time evenly.
- No marks are deducted for a wrong answer, so there's never a reason to leave one blank.
- No calculator, no dictionary, no separate working paper. Every bit of working happens in the child's head or in the margins.
Read that list again and notice what's missing: there's nothing about advanced content. No high-school algebra, no trigonometry, no surprise topics. Everything on the paper is maths your child has already met in a NSW primary classroom.
The headline
The difficulty doesn't come from hard content. It comes from applying familiar ideas to unfamiliar problems, at speed, by hand. That's a different skill from knowing the content, and it's a trainable one.
Why it's called "reasoning"
The Department spells it out: the focus is "the assessment of mathematical reasoning rather than assessment of curriculum content." In everyday language, the questions take maths your child already understands and dress it up in a problem they've never seen before. The work isn't recalling a method, it's figuring out which method even applies.
Here's a quick example of the difference. A textbook might ask, "What is three-quarters of 20?" A Selective question is more likely to say: "A baker makes 20 muffins. She sells three-quarters of them in the morning and gives two of the rest to a neighbour. How many does she have left?" Same arithmetic, but now your child has to read carefully, hold several steps in mind, and decide what's really being asked before a single calculation happens.
This is why a child who scores top marks in class can still find the test hard, and why the instinctive parent response, buy a harder textbook, usually backfires. Harder content isn't the lever. Reasoning under time pressure is.

Which topics actually show up
Because the test only draws on primary content, the list of topics is finite and knowable. Across the official practice papers, questions cluster into three familiar strands:
- Number & algebra, multi-step word problems, fractions and decimals, number sequences, and "work backwards" puzzles where you're given the answer and asked for the starting point.
- Measurement & space, area and perimeter of irregular shapes, 3D nets, angles read off a protractor, time and time-zone problems, and unit conversions.
- Statistics & probability, reading data, and simple "what's the chance" questions.
None of it is exotic. All of it can be made to feel exotic by the wording, and learning to see past the wording is, once again, the whole game.
What this means for how you prepare
Two things follow. First, you don't need to teach ahead, your child already has the raw material. Second, the practice that helps is the kind that mirrors the real thing: varied, multi-step problems, attempted under a clock, with the answers talked through afterwards. A worksheet of forty near-identical sums builds speed at one method; it does almost nothing for reasoning.
If you take one idea away, make it this: the goal isn't a child who knows more maths. It's a child who stays calm in front of a problem they've never seen, and trusts themselves to find a way in.
